About Us![]() Art and Vera with their family We were both born and raised on Iowa farms, and are high school sweethearts who married in 1968. Our children, Mike, Jon, and Melissa, have blessed us with nine wonderful grandchildren who all live either in Columbia or nearby. We moved to Columbia in 1981, and to Walk-About Acres in 1992. Friends and family who visit really enjoy our animals and the quiet location. Art started raising bees and Vera finally got her dream garden and greenhouses. In 1998, Art volunteered at the Missouri State Beekeepers’ State Fair booth, and a Columbia third grade teacher talked to him about visiting Walk-About Acres for a field trip. In 1999, we hosted our first field trip of 120 students. Last year, over 2,500 students visited Walk-About Acres along with their teachers and parents. We enjoy sharing our place, and always try to have something new for visitors! Both Art and Vera are members of Heart of Missouri Master Gardeners, Missouri State Beekeepers, Boone Regional Beekeepers, and Columbia Farmers’ Market. Art is on the University of Missouri Extension Council and Vera is treasurer of the Columbia Farmers’ Market executive board. |
